When a business asks "should we move to Odoo?", the useful answer is rarely about modules. It is about the four questions below, which decide whether any ERP — Odoo or otherwise — will work in that organisation.
Map the process before the software
Document how the business actually works today, including the workarounds. An ERP that models the ideal process instead of the real one will be bypassed within a quarter. The gap between the two is your implementation plan.
Start with one department, not the whole company
Big-bang ERP rollouts are where projects die. A focused first phase — usually inventory and invoicing, or sales and purchasing — proves the value, builds internal champions and de-risks the wider rollout.
Customisation is a tax, not a feature
Every custom field, workflow and report is a line of code that must be upgraded for the life of the system. The best implementations change the process to fit the standard, and reserve customisation for the genuinely different parts of the business.
Plan the data, not just the cutover
Projects that treat data migration as an afterthought end up with a beautiful new system full of bad data. Clean, deduplicate and validate the masters before cutover — and rehearse the migration at least twice.
